Tips from Doogies!

By raising a sociable dog that comes back to you when called, you can both be relaxed and happy ... and enjoy your time in the park and countryside.

Recall
Train your dog to come back to you when you call and always reward your dog for coming back to you - some praise or a treat or even a tug on a toy.  If they can't do recall yet, put them on a training long line (watch out!) and gently reel them back to you when you call to help them learn that that is what they need to do.

Restraining
Use this simple trick when you deliver a treat your dog to help them learn that being held by their collar is ok.  Use both hands - treat with one and get hold of the collar with the other at the same time.

Socialise with intent
Help your doggy with introductions in the park by trying to keep the introductions one at a time.  Reward your dog with gentle praise or a little treat for polite dog-dog introductions.

Do you need a securely fenced site?

Do you need sole use sessions for training and exercise? - both Doogies & Dorset Dogs, amongst many other individuals and trainers, are seeking more places like this so if you are an interested land owner who might be able to offer a site for hire get in touch, if you are a dog owner looking for use of a site like this please let us know so we can show the demand and keep you up-to-date.

Areas close to Bournemouth and Poole or other larger urban centres are particularly needed but anywhere in Dorset could bring in extra income for landowners and mean that dogs can be trained and exercised responsibly, avoiding causing problems elsewhere.

Public fenced areas free of charge - open to all (not sole use)

There are securely fenced areas for general public use within Slades Open Space & Upton Country Park. Great for training in fenced area if you don't need sole use areas!  They are relatively small but great for training.

Fields available for hire now (sole use)!

Some great news on this - there is now a field for hire near Fordingbridge https://www.facebook.com/wildandfreedogmeadows

If you're further West/North you could try https://www.facebook.com/evasgreendogfield/

For more information about why dogs may need sole use hire or for you to keep your distance, check out the Yellow Dog article in Wagipawdia.
