Dogs and people on the beach

Join us for a free & friendly beach walk (with or without dogs) and reward yourself with a free mince pie from us at the end, and of course doggy goody bags with Marley’s Munchees treats for the dogs!

Even better…Niki from Swanage Town Council told us ‘For your information, we have our ‘Artisans on the Beach’ event taking place that day (from 30th November to 2nd January 2020) so participants could also take a stroll around the goodies on offer in the Shore Road beach huts, and also the Christmas Market is being held in Station Road on 7th December from 10am to 4pm (so Station Road will be closed to traffic)’. These events are right by the seafront and Swanage Information Centre, where we will stash goody bags and mince pies for you so we can finish the walk there for you to explore or take the 5 minute walk back to the starting point. You could also visit dog-friendly Durlston Country Park.

We will be starting the walk from Broad Road car park, near the pier and downs; to help you find the meeting place scroll down to the photos at the bottom of the page.  As some roads will be closed for the market approach along Shore Road if you’re driving, it will be open, and head past the Mowlem towards the pier. We will gather on the Downs immediately above the car park so we’re away from the cars but visible! Parking is free there next Saturday, as the Christmas market will be on; Station Road is closed for it so allow time to find your way around to the car park. We will be stopping off at Monkey Beach (which is open to dogs all year round) before taking the esplanade to the main beach and heading towards the Ballard Down (‘wild’) end of the beach. This year we will stick with the beach that has prom next to it, so if you don’t want to climb over the higher breakwaters towards the Ballard end you won’t need to. We will make the return journey on the beach too. Wellies with a good grip or waterproof boots and maybe more layers than we think we’ll need will be a good idea!

Dorset Dogs walkies are a chance for dogs to enjoy each others company – and for their humans to do the same!

At this time of year we also highlight the need to be aware of how to help flocks of coastal birds who may have a hard winter ahead – it’s mainly about keeping ourselves and our dogs at a distance so they can rest and feed without frequent disturbance (not just from dogs but walkers, fishers, bait diggers, boats…) help us by taking a 7 question survey and find out how else you can help them https://www.dorsetdogs.org.uk/wagipawdia/dogs-birds-around-our-winter-coasts/
