By raising a sociable dog that comes back to you when called, you can both be relaxed and happy … and enjoy your time in the park and countryside.

Recall
Train your dog to come back to you when you call and always reward your dog for coming back to you – some praise or a treat or even a tug on a toy.  If they can’t do recall yet, put them on a training long line (watch out!) and gently reel them back to you when you call to help them learn that that is what they need to do.

Restraining
Use this simple trick when you deliver a treat your dog to help them learn that being held by their collar is ok.  Use both hands – treat with one and get hold of the collar with the other at the same time.

Socialise with intent
Help your doggy with introductions in the park by trying to keep the introductions one at a time.  Reward your dog with gentle praise or a little treat for polite dog-dog introductions.
